At the heart of this exhibition is the work of "concept artists", creators trained in the fine arts or design, who conceive of worlds, atmospheres and characters long before they are modelled. Because before pixels are assembled, a video game first takes shape through a line, a composition, a palette. Oil paint, watercolour, traditional techniques... many rely on classic know-how. Some reinterpret works that have fallen into the public domain to invent new iconographies. Others draw directly on museum collections, recreating them with precision to enrich their stories and their worlds. Dive into the aesthetic backstage of video games, where pictorial art structures the contemporary imagination, at the origins of many video games such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Dishonored, Gris and Creaks.
